Housebuilding Innovation Awards 2007

A number of English Partnerships' projects received accolades at this event, run by the Home Builders Federation and Housebuilder magazine, for commitment to innovation in the house building industry. The awards were made to the developers responsible for building each of the schemes.
The winning schemes are:
- New Islington Millennium Community - Best Example of Community Consultation
This site in East Manchester is one of seven Millennium Communities aiming to deliver sustainable developments to Eco Homes 'Excellent' standard.
- Telford Millennium Community (Phase 1) - Best Innovation in Design
Situated in East Ketley this Millennium Community on English Partnerships' land is creating 750 new Eco Homes 'Excellent' homes on brownfield land for local people
- Oxley Woods, Milton Keynes - Best Material/Product Innovation
This site is part of the Design for Manufacture competition, which aims to drive down construction costs while maximising design and environmental quality, on English Partnerships' land.
Also, in the same awards scheme both Chimney Pot Park, Salford and Upton, Northampton were shotlisted in the Best Marketing Innovation and Best Innovation in Design categories respectively.
Building for Life Awards

Two of English Partnerships schemes won Silver Awards in the latest round of the Building for Life Awards, an initiative which promotes design excellence and celebrates best practice in the house building industry.
The winning schemes are:
Allerton Bywater (Area 3B), West Yorkshire
(English Partnerships, Fleming Fusion and PRP Architects)
This site is one of English Partnerships' seven Millennium Communities. This contemporary scheme includes atelier units which mixes commercial use amongst the residential activity. This scheme will reinvigorate the area, creating employment, entrepreneurship and a community.
Upton, (Phase 1, Site A), Northampton
(English Partnerships, Paul Newman Homes and EDAW)
The first phase of Upton, a major town centre extension, consists of high quality material, streets and landscaping. Beautifully done, with great detailing.
Best Urban Extension
Winner: Telford Millennium Community
Scheme: Housing Design Awards 2007

Telford Millennium Community has been awarded Best Urban Extension at the Housing Design Awards which celebrate housing of great ambition and vision both now and for the future.
English Partnerships' Millennium Communities Programme brings together new ways of planning, designing and constructing housing. The Telford Millennium Community is a 37 ha urban extension north west of Telford Town Centre.
The site had some interesting ecological and topographical conditions with old mineshafts and a colliery spoil tip amongst some of the problems. A detailed masterplan was developed after extensive community engagement and on its completion the site will have 675 homes, a new primary school, offices and retail and leisure services. It will also have an improved local park and playing fields, community facilities and a nature reserve.
The award was made to the architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands on behalf of the partners: English Partnerships, developer Taylor Wimpey and Telford and Wrekin Council.
Most Sustainable Stand - Public Sector
Winner: English Partnerships
Scheme: Think 07
Date: 3 May 2007
English Partnerships won the award for the most sustainable stand from the public sector at the Think 07 exhibition at ExCel, London. Designed and produced by thomas.matthews and MGA the innovative stand was constructed from wood certified by the FSC, in order to improve sustainability and lower carbon emissions.
Other features included:
- Cushions made from unbleached, 100% felted sheep wool.
- Designed to be reusable, flexible and easy to store.
- All off-cuts have been recycled or stored for later use.
- Carpeting is 100% recyclable.
- Low voltage lighting used.
- All energy use has been calculated and offset
The stand also featured an interactive game which gave delegates the opportunity to design and build their own sustainable community using building blocks made from 100% recyclable cardboard with the winner receiving a Brompton bike.
Sustainable Communities Award
Winner: Matrix Partnership for Devonport
Award Scheme: RTPI Planning Awards

The Devonport regeneration project that will reunite the community received this award at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Planning Awards which celebrate the best in planning achievement.
The urban design practice Matrix Partnership was presented with the award on behalf of the partners English Partnerships, Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership (DRCP), the Housing Corporation and Plymouth City Council.
Throughout the design process, local people helped shape the new mixed-use neighbourhood, renamed Vision@Devonport, which will feature more than 450 new homes, shops, offices and community facilities. Developer Redrow Homes has already started the demolition process and submitted a planning application for the first 65 new homes.
Excellence in Delivering Regeneration
Winner: The Castlefields Masterplan
Award Scheme: UK Housing Awards 2006

This multi-million pound project, which is revitalising the Castlefields area has scooped this major award.
Entered by the PLUS Group, the Castlefields Masterplan has so far seen 400 new homes already constructed. The homes include a range of eco-friendly features and have been built using the latest construction techniques. Other features of the scheme include improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes and £1m invested in a new link road. New energy-efficient street lighting has also been installed and a new state-of-the-art youth activity centre created.
A contemporary village square and nature reserve are also planned. Local residents were consulted and involved at all stages of the project.
Partners in the Castlefields Masterplan include PLUS Housing Group, CDS and LHT housing associations, Halton Borough Council, English Partnerships and the Housing Corporation.
Best Conceptual Design
Winner: Jacobs for Avenue Coking Works, Chesterfield
Award Scheme: Remediation Innovation Awards 2006

Engineering consultants Jacobs have been involved engaged in extensive preparatory work on this site managed by East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA). The remediation scheme at Avenue is being funded with £104m from English Partnerships' National Coalfields Programme.
Regarded as one of the worst single point sources of pollution in the UK, the conceptual design focuses on a combination of innovative treatment technologies to sustainably reclaim and reuse contaminated soils to create a development platform and deliver high quality public open space for leisure and amenity use.
Most Innovative Remediation Method
Winner: Wrekin Construction for Northwich Salt Mines
Award Scheme: Remediation Innovation Awards 2006

The engineering work is being undertaken by Wrekin Construction, assisted by consultants Arup and project managed by Vale Royal Borough Council. The project has benefited from funding of £32m from the Land Stabilisation Programme administered by English Partnerships.
This award was received for the infilling works on four abandoned salt mines to ensure the future stability of Northwich town centre. It is the largest project of its kind in the world and represents a complete solution that will enable the subsequent redevelopment and regeneration of the town. The judge commented that "this project went out of its way to secure a tremendous community endorsement".
ALARM Awards, Operational Category - Highly Commended
Winner: Introduction of On-line Project Risk Registers and Reports in English Partnerships
Scheme: ALARM Awards - National Forum for Risk Management in the UK Public Sector
Date: July 2006
The awards were set up to enable risk managers across the public sector to achieve recognition for their risk management initiatives and to highlight the benefits that these have provided to their organisations. The judges look for innovative approaches and evidence of tangible benefit to the organisation.
Editor's Choice Award
Winner: The New Fryston Village Green
Scheme: Local Government News 'Street Design' Awards
Date: July 2006
Awarded to the Building Design Partnership for their new village green in partnership with acclaimed US landscape architect Martha Schwartz at New Fryston, a scheme funded by English Partnerships as part of the National Coalfields Programme. The awards reward innovation and good practise in urban street design schemes.
Regeneration Agency of the Year
Winner: English Partnerships
Award scheme: Regeneration Awards 2005

English Partnerships has been named Regeneration Agency of the Year for its outstanding work in encouraging and delivering regeneration across England. Our achievements include:
- Starting work on 4,439 new homes
- Completing 2,518 new homes
- Freeing up surplus public-sector land for regeneration and community development
- Establishing the Milton Keynes Partnership Committee, the National Consultancy Unit, and the Advisory Team for Large Applications (ATLAS)
- Launching a new Graduate Development Programme
- Regenerating 101former coalfield sites and delivering seven Millennium Communities.
Regeneration Champion of the Year
Winner: Margaret Ford, Chairman, English Partnerships
Award scheme: Regeneration Awards 2005

Margaret Ford has been awarded this title for her personal commitment to regeneration, going above and beyond the call of duty to lead English Partnerships in delivering benefits to communities large and small across the country.
Property Deal of the Year
Winner: English Partnerships, Igloo and East Midlands Development Agency for Blueprint
Award scheme: East Midlands Property Awards 2005
Date: 29 September 2005
Blueprint aims to develop sustainable sites for both housing and businesses that the Government has identified as a major requirement. Blueprint has already bought around £35m-worth of properties in Leicester, Derby and Nottingham.
Building for Life - Silver Award
Winner: Butts Green, Kingswood, Warrington (Developer: Bellway Homes Manchester; Design Consultants: John Wilson Associates)

The Building for Life Standard represents the national standard for housing and neighbourhoods. It is awarded to new housing projects that demonstrate a commitment to high design standards and good place making. The judges praised the creative design approach of this site. English Partnerships worked closely with the developer and provided the brief. Bellway must be congratulated for their response to English Partnerships' eco-design requirements.
Commendation for a Significant Contribution to Town Planning in the West Midlands

Best Advertising / Brochure for a Regeneration Development or Mixed-Use Scheme
Winner: Lime Street Gateway, Liverpool
Award scheme: PAMADA (UK Property Advertising, Marketing & Design Awards 2004)
Date: March 2005
Awarded to English Partnerships (lead partner and site owner) together with Liverpool Vision (Development Partner), Liverpool City Council, Mersey Travel & Network Rail for their brochure on this important gateway entrance to the city of Liverpool.
