Basildon was designated as a New Town on 4 January 1949. Located 36m east of London and with an area of 3,165 ha (7,818 acres). The population for Basildon District is 165,888 and for the new town is 102,400 (2001 Census).

Now, at almost 60 years old, areas of the town are in need of revitalisation and regeneration. Basildon District has been identified as a hub for business and employment growth in the Thames Gateway.

 

Travel and transport

Basildon is close to the A13, A127 and to the M25 London Orbital Motorway, making it convenient for Stansted and London City airports.  A rail link runs between Basildon and Fenchurch Street Station (for the City of London).

 

Employment

Local industries include engineering, avionics, automotive, distribution and data processing, brewing and electronics.

Major companies are Ford’s research and development centre, Fiat, New Holland Tractors, Michelin Tyres, BAE Systems, and Commercial Union UK's administrative centre.

 

English Partnerships is a partner in the Basildon Renaissance Partnership, along with Basildon District Council, East of England Development Agency (EEDA), Essex County Council, the Housing Corporation and Thames Gateway South Essex Partnership. The Partnership aims to champion the area’s interests and to act as a conduit for funding and investment.

 

Current projects

English Partnerships is involved in the following projects in and around Basildon:

  • Basildon Town Centre Regeneration: To assess the options and capacity for the town centre, English Partnerships and Basildon Renaissance Partnership has commissioned a study to identify the key areas for redevelopment and assess what improvements can be made in both retail and housing terms.
  • Five Links: English Partnerships has been supporting the regeneration of the Five Links Estate, working with Basildon District Council, Basildon Community Housing Association, house-builder Lovell and EEDA to bring forward the second phase of development of the estate.
  • Craylands & Fryerns: English Partnerships is leading on the rejuvenation of the Craylands Estate, a development of 971 homes, and the regeneration of the site of the former Fryerns School, adjacent to Craylands.
  • Gardiners Lane South: Plans for Gardiners Lane South, one of the largest development sites in Basildon, will involve the relocation of six sports clubs to new premises to enable the development of a predominantly residential scheme, to include  new mixed tenure homes and open space.
