Brownfield Skills
The Draft Brownfield Skills Strategy has been developed as joint working between English Partnerships and the Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC). This follows recommendations to Government for an overarching National Brownfield Strategy for England which includes a skills strand.
Extensive research and consultation surrounding the skills barriers that prevent or hinder the reuse of brownfield land has revealed that securing the highly skilled workforce required is a recurrent problem. This applies to the private sector as well as for local government and other public sector organisations.
Draft Brownfield Skills Strategy
The public consultation period for the Draft Brownfield Skills Strategy, which makes 25 recommendations, closed on 11 June 2008. A summary of responses for this is available.
It is expected that the final strategy will be published by the new Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) early next year.
The draft strategy has four objectives:
- Changing attitudes towards skills
- Encouraging cross-disciplinary working
- Raising the profile of brownfield careers
- Promoting a common framework for skills development
