Cane Hill Hospital site, Coulsdon
Background
This former asylum in Coulsdon, south of Croydon, which originally opened in 1883, was purchased by English Partnerships in April 2007.
Since its closure in the early 1990s it has fallen into disrepair and many of the buildings are derelict.
Working with the London Borough of Croydon, English Partnerships is committed to creating a development of the highest design and environmental quality that fully integrates with the town centre.
The site covers 83 ha in total and has been earmarked for a mixed-use development supported by transport links, infrastructure and community facilities.
Current status
The community consultation process is underway to ensure that local people have the opportunity to comment on the emerging regeneration proposals.
Site surveys have been undertaken and this has led to the production of a report which sets out the criteria to explore a range of development options.
Local people were consulted on the options for the hospital site in December last year and a public exhibition of the preferred regeneration option will take place in the spring. This will form the foundation upon which a development partner will be selected by the end of 2008.
