Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

Gorton Monastery Village, East Manchester

Gorton Monastery is a stunning 19th Century Grade ll listed building of international merit and major historic importance in the heart of East Manchester. A major restoration programme has just been completed, where more than £6m of public funding was secured to see the building converted into a major cultural venue that will be used for exhibitions, conferences and community events.

The adjacent 1.9ha site was acquired by English Partnerships in March 2000. The vision of project partners English Partnerships, Gorton Monastery Trust and New East Manchester Urban Regeneration Company is to deliver an imaginative residential scheme of excellent quality, which is both innovative yet sensitive to the character of the Monastery and which demonstrates commitment to high quality design and environmental sustainability.

The site, just three miles east of the city centre, sits within New East Manchester’s regeneration area and the Manchester Salford Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder area. It will play an important part in the renewal process for Gorton, along with other major projects including the regeneration of the district centre and the future improvement of Gorton West.

Following a comprehensive developer competition during 2006, Gleeson Regeneration Ltd and their architects were selected to deliver the Gorton Monastery Village.
