Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

Heart of East Greenwich, London

Background

The Heart of East Greenwich project is focused around the former Greenwich District Hospital. English Partnerships acquired the former hospital site from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust in November 2004. The difficult task of demolishing the hospital building, which began in autumn 2005, was completed late last year.

At the heart of the vision for the scheme is the provision of high-quality public leisure, learning and healthcare facilities on the hospital site, all within easy access of existing and new communities. With this comes the opportunity to inject new life into the area through the provision of new private and affordable homes at a density reflective of an urban environment, and new retail/commercial facilities fostering investment and employment growth.

The provision of new public facilities also create the opportunity for a comprehensive and cohesive regeneration response to the area by addressing redevelopment options at the sites vacated by existing services, principally at the Arches Leisure Centre, the East Greenwich Library and a number of sites along Blackwall Lane, East Greenwich.

The Heart of East Greenwich scheme is also one of the sites included in the London-Wide Initiative.

Current status

Plans for the Heart of East Greenwich are designed to ensure the scheme is integrated into its surroundings and will be a sympathetic and sustainable development for this important site.

English Partnerships appointed First-Base as its development partner in December 2006.

The site is being developed through a collaborative approach with the local community and local stakeholders. Consultations and workshops have already taken place, enabling the community to help inform the masterplanning process.

Further community consultation on this LWI project took place in October 2007.  Plans for the Heart of East Greenwich are due to be submitted by First Base to Greenwich Council in the near future.
