Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

Peterborough City Centre

Profile

The ancient cathedral city of Peterborough was designated a New Town in 1967 and has grown rapidly ever since in terms of both population and economy.

As one of only four UK Environment Cities, Peterborough offers excellent lifestyle benefits for families and single people, young and old alike. A good choice of schools and colleges satisfies all needs from nursery to degree level and there are leisure and cultural facilities to satisfy every interest.

Peterborough boasts an 809 ha country park and is home to professional ice-hockey, soccer and speedway. It has an annual festival and hosts the annual East of England Show - the second largest agricultural event in the country.

Travel and transport

Peterborough is 80m north of London and is linked to the capital by the A1(M) and M11 motorways. It is on the East Coast main rail line and has frequent services that take passengers into London in around 50 minutes.

London Stansted airport is one hour away and Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham airports are all readily accessible. The east coast ports of Felixstowe and Harwich are easily reached via the A14 trunk route.

Employment

Peterborough has a thriving, exciting and varied environment-business base. There is a sizeable cluster of 250 environment sector organisations employing more than 4,500 people and accounting for over five per cent of the city´s GDP. Plans are well advanced to stimulate further significant growth within the sector.

The Encluster initiative - supported by English Partnerships and other national, regional and local authorities - has been established to help identify and exploit environment business opportunities, to stimulate innovation and to foster the development of specialist expertise.

A new innovation centre will encourage start-up businesses to focus on environmental technologies.

Project

South Bank Carbon Challenge

Working alongside the East of England Development Agency and Peterborough City Council, English Partnerships is developing a 7.6 ha site in the city which has been identified as the second site in the country to be developed as part of the Carbon Challenge programme.
